Most of us believe we’re the exception. It’s how our brains are wired.
When advice goes out, or feedback is shared, it’s human nature to think it applies to someone else. That we’re already doing fine. That we’re different. That the call to action is meant for the person next to us.
But growth rarely works that way.
In hospitality, teams often assume feedback is meant for someone else. The notes about urgency, warmth, attention to detail, or execution are heard and quietly filed away under: “Not me.”
But when we think we’re the exception, we often become the rule. The ones who don’t improve. The ones who stop growing.
The best teams don’t make excuses. They don’t wait for feedback to be personally directed at them. They treat every lesson as an opportunity to get better.
Here’s the challenge: the next time feedback is shared, don’t look around the room thinking about who should be hearing it.
Assume it’s for you.
Because it probably is.
Great teams hold themselves to great standards.
That’s what we are always building.
